History of Jalandhar Railway Station

In the year 1870, Railway authorities of Delhi, Sind, and Punjab completed the construction of 483 km long Amritsar Ambala Saharanpur Ghaziabad line. The important Firozpur Cantonment to Jalandhar city, the branch line was started in 1912.

The railway line from Jalandhar to Mukerian was completed in the year 1915 and from Mukerian to Pathankot in 1952. From Pathankot to Jammu Tawi, railway line was completed in 1971, six years after its commencement in 1965.

The entire stretch of Phagwara- Jalandhar- Amritsar got its electrification in the year 2003-04.

This railway line opened in 1971 connects Jalandhar to Jammu Tawi. Almost every train for Jammu Tawi passes through this line having track length of 222 km. Electrification on this line is expected to complete by the year 2014-15. Kapurthala is the next station from Jalandhar City on this line.

Jalandhar - Firozpur Line:

This line was opened in the year 1912 and it has witnessed historical last steam service in 1995. This railway line covering 127 km has one track. Suchipind is the next station from Jalandhar on this line.

DMU Shed in Jalandhar

Jalandhar has Indian Railway’s oldest and the largest DMU shed. It holds around 90 units that serve areas in rural Punjab and Haryana. This shed also has 2 BEML rail buses that are functional on Beas - Goindwal Sahib Railway Line.

Jalandhar Cantonment Railway station was opened in the year 1870 and it has two major lines running through it. It has station code ‘JRC’ and it also comes under Firozpur Division of Northern railways. In 1913, Hoshiarpur city was linked to Jalandhar Cantonment railway station. This broad gauge station has 3 platforms along with other facilities like parking and computerized reservation.

From here, one line runs towards Amritsar and other line runs towards Jammu Tawi. On Ambala - Attari line, it has Cheru as preceding station while Jalandhar city is the next station.
